The state wants more healthy food in schools
Riik soovib, et lasteaedades ja koolides oleks rohkem tervislikku toitu. Lisaraha selleks ei ole.
The state wants more healthy food in kindergartens and schools. There is no additional money for this.
The school lunch subsidy is one euro per day. It has been the same since 2018. Parents pay extra. For example, in Tartu, parents pay between 80 cents and 1.60 euros per day. In the new school year, the fee will increase by 20 cents.
In Türi municipality schools, the state and the local government pay for the food. The schools have kitchens and cooks. Laupa Elementary School offers free morning porridge. The school principal says that the new rules are good, but there is little money. Prices are rising.
The school principal says that the state should provide money. The new school year begins on September 1. Local governments cannot get additional money. Their budgets have already been made.
The Ministry of Social Affairs says that the new rules should not increase prices. Expensive foods, such as seeds and nuts, have been excluded. The state will not increase the school lunch subsidy. Local governments must find the money themselves.
Food is provided in 85 schools by the company Baltic Restaurants Estonia. The company's manager says that the state does not have a clear plan regarding school meals. Local governments create different rules. This creates differences among children.
