On Wednesday, April 23, the police detained three young people in Jõgeva suspected of murder.
Tartu politseijaoskonna juht Andrus Reimaa ütles, et politsei
alustas kohe juhtunu uurimist
Kahtlustatavad

On Wednesday, April 23, the police detained three young people in Jõgeva. Among them are a 16-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl, and a 16-year-old boy. They are suspected of the murder of a 49-year-old man that occurred on Tuesday.

In the evening, the court, at the request of the prosecutor's office, took the suspected girls into custody. On Tuesday, April 22, at 23:00, a police patrol in Jõgeva noticed a woman on Jaama Street waving her hands. The woman led the police officers to a man lying on the ground. The man had been beaten and showed no signs of life. The police officers and paramedics tried to revive the man but were unsuccessful. The man died at the scene.

Andrus Reimaa, head of the Tartu Police Department, said that the police immediately began investigating the incident. Investigators visited the scene, checked security camera recordings, and spoke with witnesses. Based on the evidence, it was determined that two underage girls and one boy are suspected of beating the 49-year-old man. The police detained them on Wednesday and charged them with murder.

The suspects have not been previously convicted criminally. The police are now investigating their exact connection to the victim, the motive behind their actions, and other circumstances. Reimaa added that incidents of violence involving young people are always taken seriously. The suspects had previous contacts with the police in minor offenses but not related to violence. The investigation continues to determine why the events of Tuesday evening ended with such tragic consequences.

Raul Heido, prosecutor of the Southern District Prosecutor's Office, said that according to the initial investigation version, the victim and the suspects were acquaintances. Their relationships may have led to the beating. Preliminary evidence suggests that the girls played a more significant role in the crime. The prosecutor's office requested their arrest, and in the evening, they were taken into custody for two months. Based on the evidence gathered so far, the boy's role in the crime is not central, and there is currently no risk of him avoiding the proceedings. Therefore, his arrest was not requested.

The criminal investigation is conducted by the Southern Prefecture and led by the Southern District Prosecutor's Office.
