Restrictions have been imposed on the farm. Pigs cannot be moved in or out of the farm. There are also strict requirements for the movement of people and transportation. The Agricultural and Food Board asks for understanding and peace for officials to resolve the situation.
The notification of the pigs' illness reached the authorities on Friday. Laboratory test results confirmed the presence of ASF. All pigs on the farm must be culled, as there is no other way to limit the spread.
The authorities note that only officials may enter the quarantine zone. Traffic around the farm may be disrupted. Another enterprise keeping pigs is located within the 10-kilometer restriction zone. Restrictions will also be imposed on this enterprise.
After the culling of the animals, the Board will organize cleaning and disinfection of the farm premises. After a certain period, it will be possible to start pig farming in the buildings again.
Compensation can be claimed for dead and culled pigs. Frank Kutter's company is expecting difficult times, both financially and emotionally.
ASF is not contagious to humans or other animal species. The virus can spread through an infected animal or contaminated materials. The last ASF case in domestic animals was detected in Tartu County.
All ASF outbreaks in domestic animals in Estonia have been detected during the summer period, from June to September.
