Pärnu City Council voted no confidence in mayor Kristel Voltenberg on Monday. Voltenberg said before the vote that she had resigned herself. However, the council still decided to vote on the no-confidence motion.
23 out of 39 council members voted in favor of the no-confidence motion. According to law, a mayor can submit a resignation, but it takes effect the next day. Therefore, Voltenberg was still mayor during the vote.
Voltenberg said she wants to leave politely. She said: "I will submit my resignation myself and restore my authority as a council member."
No confidence had been voted against a mayor in Pärnu for over 20 years. This was stated by council chairman Andrei Korobeinik.
At the same meeting, Siim Suursilla (Isamaa) was elected as the new mayor. The mayor's position belongs to Isamaa according to the coalition agreement. The city council chairman remained with the Center Party. The third coalition member is EKRE.
