Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that President Alar Karis's statements are contrary to Estonia's principles. Karis suggested that the European Union could appoint a special envoy who would talk to Russia about ending the war in Ukraine.
Michal said that Estonia's foreign policy is to support Ukraine and keep pressure on Russia. He said that Estonia does not make concessions to Russia. Michal added that Estonia is one of Ukraine's biggest supporters.
Michal said that the European Union has always been at the negotiating table. He emphasized that only pressure works against Russia.
Michal said that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not only want territory. He wants Ukraine's sovereignty. Michal does not see a contradiction between the government and the president. He sees a contradiction with Estonia's foreign policy line.
Minister of Education Kristina Kallas said that Estonia's foreign policy has not changed. She said that no concessions are made to the aggressor. Kallas emphasized that Russia's attacks have increased.
Kallas said that negotiations with Russia have not prevented military attacks. She said that it is existentially harmful for Estonia to talk to the aggressor.
President Alar Karis participated in a meeting in the United Arab Emirates. He said that the European Union could appoint a special envoy to negotiate with Putin. Karis also said that Ukraine should cede territory to achieve peace.
