The Tartu city government has approved the plan for a new police station. The new building will be constructed in Annelinn on plots at Kalda tee 5 and Kalda tee 11.
Currently, this area is largely natural and undeveloped. Thirteen buildings are planned for the new area. One of them will be the new Police and Border Guard Board building.
Tartu deputy mayor Kertu Vuks said that the new district will have various functions. There will be residential and commercial buildings. Apartment buildings will be up to six stories high.
The new police station will be a central object in the city block. The building may be up to six stories tall. Currently, the police station is located on Riia Street, but there is a space shortage there.
Lauri Tamm, head of the Southern Prefecture's information office, said the current building no longer meets the police's needs. The new building will provide better working conditions.
One-third of the new district will remain as green space. There are also protected species in the area. The exact location of parking spaces will be determined later.
The detailed plan is on public display from June 19 to mid-July. The city government hopes to enact the plan in the fall.
