The European External Action Service (EEAS) has selected Aivo Orav as the new Ambassador to Turkey. He is currently serving as the head of the EU delegation in Kosovo.
Matti Maasikas, acting Deputy Secretary-General of the EEAS, wrote on social media: "A big thank you to Aivo Orav for his excellent work in Kosovo! You will be missed. Congratulations on your new role in Turkey!"
Aivo Orav became the EU representative in Kosovo in 2024. Prior to that, he worked as the head of the Estonian delegation to the European Union.
Orav is the first Estonian to lead an EU delegation. He began this work in Macedonia in 2012. After that, he worked in Montenegro.
Previously, Orav has served as Estonia's ambassador to Turkey and Poland. In 2020, he became Estonia's permanent representative to the European Union.
Other Estonian diplomats have also served as EU ambassadors. For example, Tiina Intelmann, Riina Kionka, Matti Maasikas, and Toivo Klaar.
