Tallinna Linnatransport (TLT) announces that a new charging point has been built at the Kopli terminal. This will allow trolleybus line number 9 to be reopened starting in the autumn of 2026.
TLT board chairman Kaido Padar said that the Kopli charging point is an important step. It creates the possibility to restore trolleybus line number 9. In addition, the project may help in the restoration of other trolleybus lines in the future.
The construction of the charging point cost €140,000. VAT is added to this. Trolleybus line number 9 was closed in 2017. The line operated on the Mustamäe (Keskuse)-Kopli route. Bus line number 72 began operating on the same route.
Before the closure of all trolleybus lines, there were four more lines in Tallinn: 1, 3, 4 and 5. The closure of trolleybus lines began in 2000. At that time, line number 8 ceased operations.
Tallinn has ordered 40 new battery trolleybuses. They will arrive next summer. Then lines 1, 3, 4 and 5 are expected to reopen. Currently, reconstruction works for the trolleybus lines are underway. After the works, the old overhead lines will be removed from the city center. New overhead lines will be installed along the main roads of Sõpruse puiestee and Mustamäe tee.
TLT employs 1,500 vehicle drivers. They serve 80 city lines. TLT’s vehicle fleet includes 557 buses, 42 social transport buses and 65 trams. 40 new trolleybuses will arrive in the summer of 2026.
