Estonia's energy economy must ensure energy security, a good energy price, and low environmental impact. Investments in energy are large and long-term, so a clear strategy is crucial.
The development plan focuses on diversifying electricity production. This means more renewable energy, new storage options, and nuclear energy. Renewable energy devices can be quickly built and spread out.
The development plan has a new goal: to achieve 80% clean electricity by 2035. This will be achieved using nuclear and renewable energy. It is also necessary to develop power grids to ensure their reliability.
Plans include building new gas and biogas plants. This will help close old oil shale plants and reduce environmental impact. Electricity storage will help reduce price fluctuations.
The development plan also covers gas supply, heating, and cooling. District heating will use new technologies like heat pumps and heat storage. In the gas sector, the goal is to increase the share of renewable gas.
For transport fuels, at least 26% should be clean energy by 2035. The development plan was sent to ministries and interest groups for feedback. It will be submitted to the Riigikogu, and the government will approve it by the end of 2025.
