The current system is transparent
On Tuesday, a vote took place in the European Parliament. The Parliament expressed its opinion on the EU's new budget. The budget is to be in effect for the years 2028–2034.
The European Parliament adopted a report. The report recommended increasing the budget by 10%. 370 people voted in favor, and 201 against. 84 people abstained.
Both Ratas and Terras belong to the European People's Party (EPP). Ratas voted in favor of increasing the budget. Marina Kaljurand, Sven Mikser, Urmas Paet, and Jana Toom did the same. Terras, however, voted against.
Ratas said that a larger budget would help the EU achieve its goals. He believes that with a smaller budget, this would not be possible. Additional funds would be needed to strengthen defense and competitiveness.
Ratas emphasized that funding the EU's eastern border is very important for Estonia. He also spoke about the EU's agricultural policy and cohesion.
Ratas said that, in his opinion, member states should contribute more. Currently, 70% of the EU budget comes from member states' contributions. The rest comes from customs duties and the EU's own resources.
Ratas was cautious about new taxes. He said that tax issues should remain within the competence of the member states.
Terras did not support the introduction of new taxes. He said that the current system is transparent and fair. It allows member states to better control their tax money.
