Four years ago, the Lääneranna electoral coalition secured 11 seats in the council. The other seats were divided between EKRE, Keskerakond, Isamaa, and Tegusad Communities. The coalition was formed by the Lääneranna electoral coalition, Keskerakond, and Isamaa.
After the 2023 school reform, Isamaa and part of Keskerakond decided to leave the coalition. As part of the reform, Metsküla and Lõpe schools were closed. Virtsu school became a four-grade school. Koonga and Varbla schools became six-grade schools.
The Lääneranna electoral coalition is now participating in the elections under a new name. They are called the Lääneranna People’s Electoral Coalition. The coalition's representative, Karmen Pikkmets, says it is difficult to form a coalition again. However, she believes that the coalition has supporters.
Keskerakond has not yet decided whether they will participate in the elections. The right-wing parties, Isamaa, and EKRE will definitely participate. Isamaa and EKRE believe that the current municipal leadership has not performed well. They say that the school reform has caused harm.
EKRE and Isamaa say they do not see common ground with the current municipal leadership. They believe that people remember what has happened over the past four years.
A new electoral coalition, Terve Vald, is entering the elections. One of its leaders is Silvia Lotman. She says they want to support rural life. Terve Vald has brought together village communities that were harmed by the municipal council’s decisions.
EKRE and Isamaa say they can cooperate as much as possible with Terve Vald. There are now 17 seats in the Lääneranna municipal council, not 21.
Ingvar Saare, who has led Lääneranna municipality for three years, is not running there. He is running on the Isamaa list in Kihnu.
Lääneranna municipality was formed in 2017 through the merger of Hanila, Lihula, Koonga, and Varbla municipalities. The municipality belongs to Pärnu County. On January 1, 2025, Lääneranna municipality had 5087 inhabitants. The municipality has one town (Lihula), one small town (Virtsu), and 150 villages.
