The 2025 Citizen of the Year is Piia Kallas, the chairman of the Rescue Association Board. The title of Citizen of the Year was presented by the Minister of the Interior, Igor Taro. Taro stated that Estonia is a country with many remarkable people.
Taro added that the recipients of the annual decorations are individuals from various fields. Examples include youth development, community life promotion, and support for the sick. He emphasized that Piia Kallas's work in the field of rescue and assistance in Ukraine is highly significant.
Piia Kallas mentioned that there are many people in Estonia who deserve the title of Citizen of the Year. She also spoke about four years of assistance in Ukraine, which was a special and emotional experience.
The candidates for Citizen of the Year came from different fields. They included promoters of local communities and individuals from the health and education sectors. Decorations were awarded to 15 people, including Kertu Künnapas and Anni Roost.
Citizen's Day in Estonia is celebrated on November 26th. Decorations and titles are awarded to individuals only once in their lifetime. Candidates can be nominated by all individuals and organizations.
