The Health Board's survey examined smoking and e-cigarette use in public spaces. Among 1,725 respondents, 84% believed that smoking and e-cigarette use should be more regulated in public spaces. About 70% of respondents found that smoking in public spaces is common and disturbs others.
Since the beginning of July, France has banned smoking in several public places. Prohibited areas include, for example, around schools, bus stops, and sports fields.
Former Health Minister Riina Sikkut said that although people complain, politicians have not discussed new smoking restrictions. She said that before 2004, there was a smell of smoke in restaurants and bars, but now no one misses it.
Deputy Chairman of the Social Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu, Riina Solman, believes that the laws do not prevent people from smoking because they do not know where they are allowed to smoke and where not. She said there should be institutions that explain this. Solman added that smoking in apartment buildings and on balconies is a major problem. She mentioned that when she raised this topic in her circle, it was found that grilling fish would also be a problem because it smells bad.
