Volunteers help frogs cross the road safely
Eestis algas konnade kevadränne. Vabatahtlikud aitavad konnadel ohutult maanteed ületada.
The spring migration of frogs has begun in Estonia. Volunteers help frogs cross the road safely.
Narva frogs winter in the border river. From the river to the spawning site is only a few hundred meters. But in front of them is a busy road. In spring, many frogs die there.
When the frogs start moving, volunteers come to their aid. Frogs follow certain paths. Volunteers use nets to catch the frogs. They wait until the volunteers arrive.
There are about 15 volunteers in Narva. They have been helping frogs for the third year. They carry buckets and gloves. Frogs can be warm, so gloves are necessary.
Local residents initially looked at the volunteers strangely. Last year, even the frog net was closed. But now they are used to it. Some laugh, others praise. Most react positively.
The spring migration of frogs began on the weekend. It will continue for another two or three weeks. There can be especially many frogs in the late evening.
