The reserve police drone unit started work this year. Using a drone, one person has already been found in the forest, and order has been maintained. Reserve police officers say that working in the drone unit is interesting and useful.
Andrus Reimaa, head of the Tartu Police Department, stated that drones are now important for security and society. The city purchased the drone with a fee to use it for event security and searching for people.
The drone group has organized successful searches together with a dog handler. The last time, a person was quickly found in the forest. Drone operator Joosep Roosaar said it felt good when the person was found alive and well. He mentioned that operating a drone requires technical skill and a license.
Another member of the drone group, Kaimo Kukk, shared his experience. He used the drone near the railway, but no one was found there. He said that operating a drone is not a simple game but requires serious training and a license.
Roosaar and Kukk have been working as reserve police officers for several years. They say that drones add new and interesting aspects to their work. Currently, there are a few members in the Tartu drone group, but there are plans to increase the number of people.
Reimaa emphasized that the drone group is not just a side project. The police use drones according to the situation and the law.
