The Bronze Soldier monument located at the Tallinn Military Cemetery was vandalized overnight into Sunday, but by noon, part of the vandal's work had been cleaned up.
The police reported that the Bronze Soldier monument at the Tallinn Military Cemetery was damaged on Saturday evening. The police initiated an investigation into the damage. Police spokesperson Vaiko Vaher said: "It is currently known that there were two vandals. Their identities are still unknown."
A patrol checked the area, but the vandals were not found. Photos showed that something referring to deportation had been written on the monument.
The police contacted the Estonian War Museum, which manages the cemetery. Museum director Hellar Lill said: "A cleaning company has already removed most of the graffiti from the monument."
The War Museum had ordered security for the Bronze Soldier for the occasion of May 9th. The security lasted from May 8th to May 10th. However, the damage occurred later, after the guard had already left.
This is not the first time the Bronze Soldier has been damaged. A police spokesperson said: "It is clear that the Bronze Soldier causes controversy in society. The police naturally respond to any damage to property."
