On Monday, the Ministry of the Interior made a proposal for the legislation of number plate recognition cameras. On Tuesday, the Legal Affairs Committee discussed this proposal. Representatives from the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, the Data Protection Inspectorate, and the Chancellor of Justice were present.
The head of the Legal Affairs Committee, Madis Timpson, said that the proposal had shortcomings. Therefore, it was not possible to quickly adopt it. "We would have liked to process it quickly, but due to the shortcomings, we couldn't," said Timpson.
The Legal Affairs Committee decided that the draft will first go to the government and the Ministry of the Interior. After that, it will be sent to the Riigikogu. Timpson estimated that this could take at least half a year. During this time, the Ministry of the Interior must clarify its plans.
