Technical University and Estonia's Economic Growth
Tehnikaülikoolilt oodatakse suuremat panust Eesti majanduse ja ettevõtluse arengusse.
The Technical University is expected to make a greater contribution to the development of Estonia's economy and entrepreneurship.
Many people believe that Tallinn University of Technology should do more to help Estonia's economy grow. It is important whether Tiit Land or Tarmo Soomere becomes the new rector.
IT entrepreneur Taavi Kotka is working with the university on a girls' technology club. His goal is to increase girls' interest in technology and natural sciences. Kotka says that many steps forward have been made in the last five years.
However, Kotka believes that the technical university should change faster. He would recommend more carefully selecting subjects that meet today's needs. For example, more attention could be paid to the use of AI in programming and less to code correctness.
Kotka believes that private sector specialists should be more involved in academic science. This requires motivation and stepping out of the comfort zone.
Hando Sutter, the CEO of the Employers' Confederation, says that the technical university should support the competitiveness of Estonian companies. Currently, there is a shortage of engineers in various fields. Sutter wants to see a clear vision and a strong team from the new rector.
Sutter also says that the technical university should focus more on applied sciences. Soome could be an example of how to actually implement scientific development.
Margit Sutrop, the head of the Riigikogu's higher education support group, says that the technical university has done a good job in sparking young people's interest in technology. However, she would recommend placing more emphasis on applied sciences that would support economic growth.
Sutrop believes that the technical university's big challenge is to attract young people to scientific careers. She emphasizes that young people choosing a scientific career must be offered security and support.
The new rector will take office in the new academic year. The rector is elected by the 11-member council of the technical university.
