Martin Herem, the former head of the Estonian Defense Forces, says that drones are important for defense. He states that drones need to be purchased and deployed quickly. Herem says: "If we want, we can quickly adopt drones. For this, a decision needs to be made and drones need to be purchased."
Herem now works at the defense industry company Frankenburg Technologies. He says that drones must be part of training. It is also necessary to learn how to fight against drones and how to use them. Herem adds: "It is important to wage war from a distance of 50–100 kilometers or more."
Special forces soldier Rene Toomse supports Herem's proposal. Toomse says: "Herem's idea to purchase drones is good. Drones will remain part of battles." Toomse adds that professional soldiers can fight against drones. But he believes that drones will remain part of battles.
Toomse also says: "War is complicated. Drones alone are not enough. Infantry is also needed. To achieve success, different methods need to be combined. The more tools available, the better one can surprise and outmaneuver the opponent."
Toomse also mentions that Ukraine and Russia are currently leading the world in the use of drones.
