I have to start with sad news. Asphalt has run out in Estonia.
Tallinn deputy mayor Kristjan Järvan said that bitumen is currently not coming from Sweden or Lithuania. One Swedish company decided not to deliver it. A Lithuanian company raised prices and their plant stopped working.
This means Estonian asphalt plants cannot get bitumen. Construction companies that have their own plants can freely sell leftover asphalt.
Problems are also arising for the city of Tallinn. The city planned to do more roadworks than were initially budgeted. Now there isn't enough asphalt available on the market.
The asphalting works on Liivalaia Street began on Monday. Tallinn is giving them an additional two weeks for the works. The mayor said they are not taking risks. They don't want streets to remain excavated without asphalt by winter.
Transport Administration head Mart Arusoo said bitumen supplies to Estonia have not completely ended. The price of bitumen has risen due to oil prices. No new supplies are coming from Sweden, but Lithuania can still provide bitumen.
