Kristina Kallas says that Ülle Madis currently has 67 supporters in the Riigikogu. To be elected president, at least 68 votes are needed.
The Reform Party supports Madis. They have 37 members and 2 deputies. The Eesti 200 faction has 13 members. The Social Democrats (SDE) have 9 members and 5 more deputies. Zuzu Izmailova does not support Madis. In total, this would be 65 votes. 3 more votes are needed.
Kallas says: "The missing support is from Isamaa and the Center Party." Madis has strong support, but the final decision depends on these two parties.
Kallas does not understand why Isamaa and the Center Party are not stating their position. She believes they should say whether they support Madis.
Kallas sees no reason why Madis should not be supported. She believes that some parties are acting out of partisan interests. Madis is a strong and beloved person.
The Riigikogu will elect the president on September 2, 2026. To nominate a candidate, 21 deputies are required. The candidate must be at least 40 years old and an Estonian citizen. The president cannot serve two consecutive terms.
