Jõhvi municipality wants to decide the fate of the upper secondary school part of Toila School in October. Previously, there have been attempts to close this part, but parents went to court and won. Now the upper secondary school continues to operate based on the court decision.
Last year, Toila and Jõhvi municipalities merged. Toila municipality decided to close the upper secondary school part. Parents disagreed and won in court. Now the new municipality must decide whether the upper secondary school will remain or be closed. If the upper secondary school is closed, new school buildings can be constructed with state funding.
Jõhvi deputy mayor Heidi Uustalu says the decision will be made on October 29. She doesn't yet know what the decision will be, but a decision is necessary. Only this way can the construction of new school buildings proceed.
In Toila School, there are only 7 students in grade 10. However, there are 29 students in grade 9. Principal Signe Ilmjärve says the low number of students comes from the uncertain future of the upper secondary school. Although grade 10 students have been told they can graduate from upper secondary school, it's still unclear whether the upper secondary school will remain.
The uncertainty affects not only students but also teachers. Some teachers have only one-year employment contracts.
