Isamaa leader Helir-Valdor Seeder says the law needs to be changed. He says the original balance has been lost. Initially, local government representatives had a larger share in the electoral college than the Riigikogu. Now they are almost equal. Isamaa wants local representatives to have a larger role again.
Social Democrat Riina Sikkut says they should return to the situation before the administrative reform. She wants to increase the number of electors. Small municipalities should have two representatives instead of one. With the Social Democrats' amendment, there would be 204 electors. Isamaa even wants over 250 electors.
The coalition is currently not unanimous on this change. Reform Party leader Õnne Pillak says they are still discussing it. She is not sure if the change will pass.
Riina Sikkut hopes that a practical solution will be found. She says that if the Riigikogu does not elect the president in three rounds, the electoral college may not produce a better result. After all, the electoral college is made up of the same Riigikogu members.
