The Social Democrats failed to unite in support of their candidate Madle Lippus. The chairman of the council, Mihhail Kõlvart, said that the opposition could not gather all its members. Lippus remained unelected as the deputy chairman.
Kõlvart told the press that this is a technical issue. He noted that the opposition was not present in full force. The votes of the coalition were also needed to elect the deputy chairman.
Previously, Madle Lippus was supported by the Center Party and Isamaa. But the opposition could not gather the necessary support. Lippus received 32 votes, but at least 40 were needed.
Kõlvart recalled that during the previous coalition, the opposition waited over half a year before Monika Haukanõmm was elected as deputy chairman. Then only a couple of additional votes were needed.
Kõlvart asks why the Social Democrats blame the coalition. He says that the opposition itself cannot agree. The coalition is ready to help with its votes if the deputy chairman elections are held again.
