The Estonian Orthodox Church gave silver and gilded items to the Church of the Transfiguration in Pärnu. These items were from Laiuse Church in Jõgevamaa.
About 40 years ago, Laiuse Church was closed. Officials in Jõgevamaa decided to close the church. The church was in good condition and did not need repairs. The congregation was active and paid taxes. But the church was closed anyway.
Large items such as church bells and iconostases were taken to Vasknarva. Smaller items such as communion utensils were left to priest Ermil Allik. He served in the churches of Laiuse and Kaarepere.
These items were in a cupboard in Kaarepere Church. They were not used, they were waiting for their time. Perhaps they were waiting for Laiuse Church to be rebuilt.
Laiuse Church entrusted its assets to Pärnu Church. Laiuse Church has not yet been restored. Near the birthplace of Jaan Poska are the ruins of the church. Only the tower remains.
The items were given to the Church of the Transfiguration in Pärnu because Metropolitan Alexander Paulus served as a priest there and in Laiuse. The items connect the fates of these churches.
The senior priest of Pärnu Church, Ardalion Keskküla, said that they are happy to take the items into custody. The items will remain in Pärnu Church until Laiuse Church is rebuilt. The hope for the church's restoration still remains.
