At the beginning of 2024, it was planned to construct 600 bunkers in border areas. The installation was supposed to start at the beginning of this year but was postponed. It was necessary to first consult with landowners, as a large portion of the defense line is on private property.
The head of the Centre for Defence Investments, Kadi-Kai Kollo, said that the development of the bunkers took longer than planned. She emphasized the importance of carefully selecting bunker locations so they fit well with the landscape and military plans.
Kollo stated that reaching agreements with landowners has not been difficult. Agreements for the first 28 bunkers are already in place. The locations for the remaining bunkers will be negotiated with landowners later.
The Baltic defense line project consists of various components, such as dragon's teeth and metal barriers. These have already been ordered and are in storage.
Various versions of bunkers were tested. Currently, one design is being used, which is easier to transport and install. The first bunkers have already been ordered and are in storage.
The goal is to install approximately 600 bunkers. The first five bunkers will be installed in December. Work will proceed gradually to gain experience.
Lieutenant Colonel Ainar Afanasjev said that the bunkers protect soldiers from artillery shells. However, they do not protect from glide bombs.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The Baltic defense ministers agreed on the principles of the defense line in 2024. The project cost is up to 60 million euros.
The defense line is necessary according to the NATO agreement, which states that the alliance will be defended from the first meter.
