The main street creates opportunities for a better business environment. It improves people's quality of life and increases traffic safety. The main street also promotes active movement and ensures smooth public transport and car traffic. Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere said that the main street will become a modern and human-friendly representative street. It follows the best examples of European urban spaces.
With the construction of the new street space, the city creates better conditions for business. It brings more life and people to the streets. Pere added that smooth and safe mobility will be ensured for all people. The accessibility of businesses and offices will improve, as customers can reach them more easily.
The main street project is based on the winning entry "Spring in the City" from the 2019 idea competition. Its authors are architects Toomas Paaver, Indrek Kustavus, Indrek Peil, Siiri Vallner, Kristel Niisuke, Valdis Linde, and Riin-Kärt Ranne.
Wednesday's public presentation is an additional engagement. It takes place together with the public display of the design conditions. All interested parties can provide feedback until May 19. Registration is required for the public presentation HERE.
Aksel Johannes Part, head of the urban planning department of the Tallinn Environment and Public Works Department, said they want to explain why and how one of the city's most important streets will change. They invite residents to think along before the project moves forward to the design phase.
Based on the design conditions, a detailed construction project will be prepared. It will specify all technical and spatial solutions, such as roads, sidewalks, utility networks, landscaping, and street lighting. Construction is expected to begin in 2028. Additional information about the project can be found HERE.
