The Polli Horticultural Research Center in Viljandi County primarily focuses on breeding fruit and berry varieties. The center also preserves their genetic resources. The center needed better conditions for plant cultivation and propagation.
Now the center has opened a new complex. There are two new greenhouses. One greenhouse is for storing disease-free plants, and the other is for cultivating plants and adapting laboratory-propagated plants.
These greenhouses are unique in Estonia. They are insect-proof, meaning insects cannot enter. This creates a safer environment for plant cultivation.
Insect-proofing does not mean the plants are immediately disease-free. The plants are checked before being introduced. Insect-proofing prevents the spread of diseases among the plants.
The new greenhouses allow disease-free material to be sent to tree nurseries and abroad. The center preserves the genetic resources of fruits and berries, which are important for scientific work.
In addition to the greenhouses, the new complex includes an economic building and a propagation laboratory.
