Riigikogu speaker Lauri Hussar convenes an extraordinary session on September 2.
The purpose of the session is to elect a new president for Estonia.
Current president Alar Karis announced on June 25 whether he will run again or not.
The president is elected by Riigikogu. A candidate can be nominated by at least 21 Riigikogu members.
The candidate who receives at least 68 votes (two-thirds of Riigikogu) becomes president.
If no one receives enough votes, a second round is held with new candidates.
If no one wins in the second round either, a third round is held between the two best candidates.
If no one wins in the third round, an electoral assembly is convened.
The electoral assembly consists of Riigikogu members and representatives of local governments.
In 2026, the electoral assembly will have 208 members: 101 Riigikogu members and 107 local government representatives.
In the first round, voting takes place between the two best candidates. The candidate must still receive a majority of votes.
If no one wins, a second round is held between the two best candidates.
If no one wins then either, the entire process starts anew in Riigikogu.
