Basic school final exams start with the Estonian language exam. Students take various subjects to graduate from basic school.
The basic school exam period begins on Monday at 10:00. The first exam is Estonian as a second language. This exam is taken by 3,339 students. On Tuesday, the Estonian language exam is taken by 11,710 students.
In total, approximately 15,400 students will take the basic school final exams this year. To graduate from basic school, a student must take three exams: Estonian, mathematics, and one elective subject.
As an elective subject, students can choose, for example, Russian, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, civics, or a foreign language. The most popular is English, taken by 9,663 students. The next are civics (over 1,700 students) and biology (nearly 900 students).
The exam period continues from May 12 to May 14 with elective exams. The mathematics exam is on May 7.
The exam questions are prepared by the Education and Youth Authority. The exam papers are assessed by the schools' own teachers.
If a student scores at least 60% correct answers on the Estonian language exam, they will receive a B1 level certificate. More information can be found on the Education and Youth Authority's website.
