The number of employees in the public sector increased
2024. aasta alguses oli avalikus sektoris 600 töötajat rohkem kui 2023. aasta lõpus. Rohkem töötajaid tuli haridus-, tervishoiu- ja julgeolekuvaldkonda.
At the beginning of 2024, there were 600 more employees in the public sector than at the end of 2023. More workers joined the education, healthcare, and security sectors.
By April 1, 2024, 136,778 people were employed in the public sector. At the end of 2023, there were 136,178 employees. This represents an increase of 0.4%.
The Ministry of Finance says that the increase in employees was mainly in education. For example, the number of employees increased at Tallinn Pelgulinna State Gymnasium and Mustamäe State Gymnasium. The number of support specialists and university employees also grew in education. For example, there are now more employees at the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology.
The number of employees also increased in the security sector. The Police and Border Guard Board and the Defense Forces have more employees than at the end of 2023.
The number of healthcare workers increased in state hospitals. For example, the number of employees at the University of Tartu Hospital increased by 136. There are also more employees at North Estonia Medical Centre and East Tallinn Central Hospital.
However, some institutions had fewer employees. For example, there were fewer jobs at the Tax and Customs Board, prisons, and the Agricultural and Food Board. The number of employees also decreased at the Social Insurance Board.
In the public sector, employees are divided into the government sector and other public sectors. The number of employees in the government sector increased by 1,332, while in other public sectors, the number of employees decreased by 712. For example, there are now fewer employees at Enefit Power, Eesti Post, and Eesti Energia.
There were more employees in state institutions. There were also more employees in state enterprises, foundations, and NGOs. However, the number of employees decreased in local governments and social insurance funds.
