Property-related crimes accounted for over half of all crimes in 2024

Frauds and thefts were very common in Estonia in 2023. Nearly 42 million euros were scammed from people.
According to the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, the most common property-related crimes were thefts. There were 10,049 cases. There were 2,203 cases of fraud and 1,456 cases of computer fraud. Most thefts occurred in stores. Alcohol, food, electronics, and money were stolen. Tartu County had the most thefts.
Computer fraud is an increasingly growing problem. In 2024, there were 3,659 cases, which is 14% more than the previous year. Scam calls, messages, and links are still common. People pay for products they do not receive. There are many scams on Facebook Marketplace.
The most common scam call was one where it was said that a family member caused a traffic accident. Cash had to be received via a parcel machine or courier. Due to frauds, individuals lost 16 million euros and companies lost 25 million euros. Scam calls caused damage of six million euros. Investment fraud damages exceeded four million euros. On Facebook Marketplace, the damage was nearly 950,000 euros. Virtual currency damage exceeded 430,000 euros.
The activities of fraudsters do not stop. New fraud methods are constantly emerging. Fraudsters operate internationally. Cooperation with various institutions is needed to catch them.
