The Riigikogu approved a new law on nuclear energy. This law allows the use of nuclear energy. The Social Democrats added that every decision to build a nuclear power plant will be made by the Riigikogu. However, they themselves voted against the law.
Social Democratic Party member Jaak Aab said that the rapid construction of a nuclear power plant could be dangerous. Estonia is not ready for this. It could be expensive for both the state and the people. Electricity prices may rise.
Isamaa leader Urmas Reinsalu said that building a nuclear power plant is possible in the future. But first, the state must create a good energy plan. This plan must take into account the opinions of experts and entrepreneurs. The state must have a clear position on the European Union's energy policy.
The ruling parties, the Reform Party and Eesti 200, support the nuclear power plant. Initially, Eesti 200 was skeptical, but now they support it.
Energy Minister Andres Sutt said that the state may participate in the nuclear power plant project. But the main investor must come from outside Estonia. There are no companies in Estonia that could build a nuclear power plant. The investor must have experience and money.
Fermi Energia plans to make the first decisions in 2029. At that time, it will become clear where the plant will be built. Board member Kalev Kallemets believes that the location will be found by the end of next year. He believes that investors will be interested if the conditions are good.
One important condition is that the state financially supports nuclear energy. Similar support is currently available for wind energy.
