The Supreme Court discusses the case of Valga municipality. The name of an electoral alliance is protected after registration.
The law states: an electoral alliance can submit documents 60 to 45 days before the elections. Two similar names cannot be registered.
Two people wanted to create an alliance named 'Meie Valga'. They submitted documents on August 25. But a day earlier, someone had submitted documents under the name 'Meie Valga'. The commission granted the first one the right.
The Supreme Court said: the commission was fair. The complainant knew about it. Also, two months was not too short a time.
The Supreme Court states: the law protects the names of old alliances. An old name can be used by a new alliance if more than half of the members are the same.
The initially unregistered alliance members now use the name 'Meie Valga eest ja heaks'.
