Election of Kersti Kaljulaid in 2016: party disputes made the elections complicated

2016. aasta olid erilised. Alguses ei valinud uut presidenti. Seejärel läks valimine valimiskokku, kuid ka seal ei valitud presidenti. Lõpuks valiti president siiski s.
Presidendivalimiste s toimus 29. augustil. Osales 99 liiget. Kolm i said hääli: Mailis Reps (26), Allar Jõks (25) ja Eiki Nestor (40). Ükski ei saanud piisavalt hääleid, seega läks valimine teise vooru.
Teine voor toimus 30. augustil. Siim Kallas sai 45, Mailis Reps 32 ja Allar Jõks 21 häält. Kuna ükski sai piisavalt hääleid, läks valimine kolmandasse vooru. Kolmandas voorus sai Siim Kallas 42 ja Mailis Reps 26 häält. President jäi siiski valimata.
Seejärel läks valimine valimiskokku. Esimeses voorus said Allar Jõks 83, Siim Kallas 81, Mailis Reps 79, Marina Kaljurand 75 ja Mart Helme 16 häält. Teises voorus kandideerisid Allar Jõks ja Siim Kallas. Siim Kallas sai 138, Allar Jõks 134 häält. President jäi taas valimata.
Lõpuks läks valimine tagasi riigikokku. 3. oktoobril valiti üheksandaks Eesti presidendiks Kersti Kaljulaid. Ta sai 81 t ja astus ametisse 10. oktoobril 2016. Kersti Kaljulaid oli kõikidest Eesti presidentidest ametisse astudes noorim.
The 2016 presidential elections were special. At first, the parliament failed to elect a new president. Then the election moved to the electoral college, but no president was elected there either. In the end, the president was still elected in the parliament.
The first round of presidential elections in the parliament took place on August 29. 99 members of the parliament participated. Three candidates received votes: Mailis Reps (26), Allar Jõks (25), and Eiki Nestor (40). None received enough votes, so the election moved to the second round.
The second round took place on August 30. Siim Kallas received 45 votes, Mailis Reps 32, and Allar Jõks 21. Since no one received enough votes, the election moved to the third round. In the third round, Siim Kallas received 42 votes and Mailis Reps 26. The president remained unelected.
The election then moved to the electoral college. In the first round, Allar Jõks received 83 votes, Siim Kallas 81, Mailis Reps 79, Marina Kaljurand 75, and Mart Helme 16. In the second round, Allar Jõks and Siim Kallas were the candidates. Siim Kallas received 138 votes, Allar Jõks 134. The president remained unelected again.
Finally, the election returned to the parliament. On October 3, Kersti Kaljulaid was elected as the ninth president of Estonia. She received 81 votes in favor and took office on October 10, 2016. Kersti Kaljulaid was the youngest of all Estonian presidents upon taking office.
