Kõlvart condemns the reduction of polling stations in Tallinn
Keskerakonna esimees Mihhail Kõlvart kritiseerib Tallinna linnavalitsuse otsust vähendada valimisjaoskondade arvu.
Center Party chairman Mihhail Kõlvart criticises the Tallinn city government's decision to reduce the number of polling stations.
The Tallinn city government decided to reduce the number of polling stations. In the 2025 elections, it will be possible to vote in 44 polling stations in Tallinn. This is 33 fewer than in the European Parliament elections and half as many as in the previous local elections.
Mihhail Kõlvart believes that this decision makes it more difficult for people to vote with a paper ballot. He said that in the previous elections, more than half of the people (53.1%) voted with a paper ballot. In the European Parliament elections, 58.3% of people preferred to vote in polling stations.
Kõlvart emphasised that many elderly people cannot use e-voting. If a polling station closes, they may not be able to vote. There are also young people who do not trust e-elections.
He cited, for example, Haabersti, where there are over 51,000 residents, but only four polling stations will be opened. In Nõmme, where there are about 37,000 residents, six polling stations will be opened.
Kõlvart said that voting at a polling station is a democratic right. He believes that other parties do not want to hear the voices of these people. He said that the ruling coalition is trying to change the election results in their favour.
Local government elections will take place on 19 October.
