The Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs sent amendments to the Prosecutor's Office Act. These changes would make the work of the Prosecutor's Office more complicated in the Supreme Court.
Minister of Justice Liisa Pakosta said that the Prosecutor's Office should obtain permission from a higher authority before turning to the Supreme Court. The Prosecutor's Office is not established for obtaining legal clarity.
In addition, the term of office of the Chief Prosecutor will be extended from five to seven years. The Chief Prosecutor can only serve one term.
The Chief Prosecutor often deals with politicians. Politicians appoint the Chief Prosecutor. This change would help the Chief Prosecutor to work with a clear conscience.
The draft would abolish the mandatory retirement age for prosecutors. Currently, it is 65 years.
The draft also creates a probationary period for prosecutors. Additionally, a prosecutor's employment can be terminated if their knowledge or skills are insufficient.
