Initially, Ignitis wanted to build two wind farms. One would have been in the Tõstamaa area, and the other near Jõõpre. In total, there would have been 28 turbines. In the spring, the company submitted an application for this. However, this year Ignitis decided to change its plan. They now only want to build one park near Jõõpre.
The Tõstamaa area is not suitable for a wind farm. A study showed that there are many birds there. The turbines could harm them. Also, the park would be very expensive there. Sander Sorts, the head of Ignitis, said it would not be reasonable.
Near Jõõpre, there would be up to 11 turbines. Over 300 people live within three kilometers of the site. At the beginning of the year, a petition with 220 signatures against the wind farm was submitted to the city.
The city of Pärnu does not want the wind farm. Deputy Mayor Robert Kiviselg said it does not fit the city's plans. There is a green area and a residential zone there. The turbines would be close to residents. Each house would receive only about 150 euros per year. This does not motivate people.
