Many gardeners are working in the garden to prepare it for winter. They are cutting off flowers that have already bloomed. Tulip bulbs can already be planted, but it's better to wait for the first frost.
Järvamaa rose grower Ülle Lepp says her roses were very strong in summer. She used a beautiful day to plant tulip bulbs. She also cut off rose flowers and replaced one rose with a hydrangea. "I don't cut roses much for winter, only small shoots. I cut dark red shoots shorter, about 15-20 centimeters. Roses can be covered if desired, but I use soil or mulch," said Lepp.
Kirna Manor gardener Eneli Käger recommends hurrying with planting tulip bulbs. She says it's better to wait for the first frost. Since Kirna has many flowers, beautiful days are used for planting them. "Tulip bulbs are suitable for planting in September or October. The soil should be warm, about nine degrees. If tulip bulbs grow too early, then spring frost will damage them. To avoid this, we mix sand and ashes," said Käger.
She added that tulip bulbs are planted at a depth of eight to nine centimeters. This year, 98,000 bulbs will be planted in Kirna Manor's tulip garden.
