The rise in the age for limited driving rights allows driving only from the age of 17
Valitsus otsustab reedel, kas nõustuda Euroopa Komisjonist tulnud juhilubade direktiiviga. Direktiiv keelab 16-aastastel noortel juhtida B-kategooria autot koos saatjaga. Juhtimisõigus on lubatud alates 17 aasta vanusest.
The government will decide on Friday whether to agree to the driving license directive from the European Commission. The directive prohibits 16-year-olds from driving a category B car with a companion. The right to drive is allowed from the age of 17.
The change remains incomprehensible to young people. Many believe that starting to drive early provides more experience. 16-year-old Jette-Ly Assor has already obtained a limited driving license. She says that getting a license early is popular among young people. The reason for its popularity is gaining experience. Jette-Ly says that many of her friends are attending driving school.
15-year-old Jaagup Peetsalu started driving school a month ago. He plans to get his driving license by summer. Young people find that more driving experience is beneficial.
According to the Transport Administration, about 300 young people apply for a limited driving license annually. Driving schools believe that the change will not affect them much. Many students do not finish their studies quickly. Therefore, applying for a limited driving license is not reasonable.
Estonia wanted driving with a companion to be allowed from the age of 16 in Europe. The European Commission did not agree with this. Larger member states did not want this change. Their young people are not ready to drive so early.
From 2029, a limited driving license can be applied for in Estonia from the age of 17. At the same time, there are new opportunities. For example, it will be possible to drive across the European Union with a companion. If a limited driving license is obtained today, new exams must be taken at the age of 18. In the future, this will no longer be necessary.
