Since July, remote-controlled taxis have been operating on the streets of Tallinn. Currently, there are only two, so ordering one can be difficult. Driving a car without a driver is new and may seem strange.
Elmo and Bliq collaborated and launched the first remote-controlled taxis in Tallinn. These cars use Elmo's technology. There are drivers, but they sit in the office and control the car from a distance.
The passenger cannot control the taxi, but can communicate with the driver via camera and microphone. The driver can change the music and seat settings. All these features are already available.
Driving a remote-controlled car is not easy. The driver has to learn and take exams. Drivers are given at least 16 hours of practice. After that, they must pass an exam. Once the exam is passed, they can start working. But gaining confidence takes time.
Remote driver Janari Lillestik says it doesn't matter whether he controls the car remotely or sits in the car. All functions are the same. For example, he can control the heating of the windows and more.
