In Estonia, many people use public water supply and sewage systems. But about 15% of people are not connected. One reason is the high connection cost.
Hans Liibek says the problem lies in the property owner's works. New pipes need to be built into the house, and this is expensive. The connection cost depends on the scale of the works. In some cases, the connection costs 1000–5000 euros. If there is a lot of work, the price can exceed 10,000 euros.
In Tallinn, the connection is even more expensive. The average cost is over 20,000 euros. The price depends on the size and location of the property.
Currently, the property owner has to pay for the connection themselves. The state does not help with money. Only in sparsely populated areas do the state and local government assist.
Liibek says there is currently no good solution. Everyone must solve their own problem. If there is no money, choices must be made.
Taavi Gröön says that connecting to the public water supply is important. It helps the environment and people. In Estonia, the situation has improved over the last 20 years. Water purification has become better.
