The Central Criminal Police terminated the investigation into Lauri Läänemets. Läänemets is a member of the Riigikogu. He was checked whether he used expense reimbursements correctly. The investigation was closed because no evidence of a crime was found.
The investigation into Egle Heinsar was also terminated. She was suspected of document forgery, but this suspicion was not confirmed either.
The police started the investigation in January. Two invoices from 2022 were examined. These invoices were for editorial services. The question was whether the invoices were forged and whether the work was actually done.
During the investigation, a lot of evidence was collected. Four people were heard. Three were witnesses, one was a suspect. Documents and computers were examined. But no evidence of a crime was found.
In February, ERR asked Läänemets whether he would continue as the chairman of SDE if he was charged. Läänemets said he did not want to discuss the topic. He believes the investigation will not bring anything new.
The police examined two invoices. One was for 219 euros, the other for 690 euros. These were paid to the editor Egle Heinsar.
Heinsar said in November that Läänemets misused expense reimbursements. She thought the money went to things unrelated to the work of the Riigikogu.
Läänemets does not consider himself guilty. He believes the suspicions came from the Isamaa party.
Läänemets has been the leader of SDE since 2022. He has been a member of the party since 2011. Before that, he was in the People's Union.
SDE's support has been 13-17% in recent months.
