The Prosecutor's Office has accused judo coach Sergei Sergejev. He is 56 years old and worked in Ida-Viru County. According to the accusation, he abused his power and trust.
Sergejev was alone with children in sports centers, camps, and competition accommodation facilities. He engaged in sexual activities with the children. One of his victims was a child under 10 years old. The child did not understand what was happening and could not resist.
The crimes occurred starting from 2015. The last acts took place at the end of last year. The police arrested Sergejev in December. This happened thanks to a tip received from child welfare authorities.
Prosecutor Saskia Kaski stated that crimes against children often remain hidden. Children are afraid to speak up, especially if the perpetrator is an authoritative figure. Kaski emphasized that a child must have a trusting relationship with an adult to feel safe enough to talk.
Kaski also said that any suspicion should be reported to the police or child welfare authorities. The police carefully investigate every tip. They protect the interests and well-being of children.
The Prosecutor's Office sought Sergejev's arrest, but the court did not agree. However, the court prohibited him from continuing his work as a coach. Sergejev has been working as a judo coach since 2005. He holds the highest coaching qualification. He worked at the Kohtla-Järve sports society Kalev and the club Afina.
