Elisa, Telia, and Tele2 now use a system that helps prevent calls with fake numbers. This system won an award in Finland. However, scam calls have not decreased in Estonia.
Elisa's communications manager Gloria Sibold says that the three major operators use this system. Tele2 joined only recently. Therefore, it was previously difficult to detect scam calls.
Sibold adds that the system does not work perfectly. Fraudsters also use numbers from smaller operators who do not use this system.
Tele2's manager Margus Nõlvak says their system was completed only in November. It took time because the technical solution was complex. Nõlvak emphasizes that blocking fake numbers is good, but it does not stop all scam calls.
Nõlvak says that fraudsters always find new ways. He recommends that all operators use this system. Then, spoofing would be completely stopped.
Justice Minister Liisa Pakosta says that security measures were implemented in Estonia without state coercion. She praises the cooperation of the operators. Pakosta adds that more measures against scam calls are planned.
In Finland, this system has been very successful. Elisa has blocked many scam calls there. They shared their technology with others. Finland now has a law that requires all operators to use it.
Elisa continues to work against fraud. They plan to fight against text message scams as well.
