Eesti 200 and the Reform Party want to change the voting rights. They want to add the so-called sunset clause. This means that in the upcoming local elections, people with gray passports will still be able to vote. But in the next local elections, they will no longer be able to.
For this change to take place, no more than 21 MPs must vote against it. Madis Kallas says that the Social Democrats hope it won't go that far. They have been talking for two and a half years about being ready to take away the voting rights from citizens of aggressor countries. They are ready to continue doing so. Kallas says they do not intend to make more compromises.
When asked if the Social Democrats will vote against it, Kallas answered affirmatively. He said they have discussed this topic many times. They have also discussed it with their party members, such as Liia Hänni and Marju Lauristin. These members have explained why it is not reasonable to take away voting rights from non-citizens. However, the Social Democrats are still ready to take away voting rights from citizens of aggressor countries. They hope it will pass.
