Vormsi island is disconnected. The ferry Ormsö has not been operating for several weeks. Ruhnu island is also out of fuel. The islands need urgent help from the state.
The ice roads to Kihnu and Vormsi are closed. High water levels are the reason. Kihnu is connected to the mainland by ship, but the Vormsi ferry is not running. The ferry has been broken since February 6. The mayor of Vormsi, Erki Savisaar, says the state should act faster.
Savisaar does not understand why a replacement ferry is not being sought from Finland or Sweden. He says a new ship is needed. Food supplies are still available, but fuel is running out. Rescuers still have fuel, but if more snow comes, it will become a problem.
The state is looking for solutions. Minister Hendrik Johannes Terras says they are checking if the ice road can be reopened. The ship's spare part will arrive on Friday, and then the ferry will start working again. The state is trying to find ways to send people and goods to Vormsi.
Ruhnu island is also out of fuel. A plane brings food, but gasoline is not available. The state ship EVA-316 will bring fuel to the island. The mayor of Ruhnu, Maret Pärnamets, says they are ready, but a storm might hinder their efforts.
Both mayors believe the state is not doing enough. They say there is no good crisis plan. Minister Terras promises that they will be better prepared by next winter.
