Tartu Herbert Masing School teaches children with special needs. In March and April, several teachers turned to the city's ombudsman. They spoke about problems with the school's work culture. The city and the Ministry of Education said there are issues with documentation and staff.
On June 9, the school's director Huko Laanoja submitted his resignation. He said it was his own decision. No one forced him to leave. Laanoja said the school's owner and the school community were surprised and a bit saddened by his decision. He hopes no one will hold a grudge against him.
Laanoja said that in the last three months, only two people have submitted resignations. One was a support specialist and the other a member of the rehabilitation team.
Now a new director is being sought. The Tartu city government expects candidates' documents by July 9 at the latest. Laanoja's last working day is August 15.
Laanoja will go on vacation from June 30 and return to work on August 11. He wants to help the new director take over the position. Laanoja plans to rest in July and give good advice to the new leader in August. What happens after August 15, Laanoja does not yet know.
