Hiiumaa mayor Hergo Tasuja wished for the Hiiumaa-mainland ferry connection to be considered as a vital service. He also wanted to extend the resident discount.
Ministry representative Tõnis Tänav said that currently ferry connections are not on the list of vital services. However, this may change if a new law is passed in the parliament.
Tasuja wanted the resident discount to apply to all large islands. But the ministry did not consider this possible.
The ministry is investigating the method of ticket price formation. However, the extension of resident discounts is not yet possible.
The ministry does not plan to remove the weekend price coefficient. It helps passengers avoid peak times.
The mayor of Hiiumaa also wanted additional trips during the low season. But the ministry said there is not enough money to increase transport volume.
The ministry advised the Hiiumaa municipal government to cooperate with the carrier. They could review the schedules and find necessary changes.
