Iran made a new proposal to the USA to end the war. They offered compromises to continue peace negotiations. The Wall Street Journal wrote about it.
According to WSJ sources, there are still disagreements regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program. This means the negotiations will remain tense.
President Trump told journalists: "They want to reach an agreement, but I'm not satisfied with it. We'll see what happens."
Iran's new proposal brings them closer to the USA. They propose discussing the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. For this, the USA must guarantee the cessation of attacks and ease the blockade of Iranian ports.
Previously, Iran wanted the USA to end the blockade before negotiations. Now they want nuclear issues to be discussed in exchange for easing sanctions.
Iran has said it is ready to hold negotiations in Pakistan early next week if the USA is open to the new proposal.
Richard Nephew, former US negotiator with Iran, says: "This aligns everyone's incentives. Both the USA and Iran get economic relief and postpone difficult issues."
Iran's state media confirmed that they have submitted a new proposal. They said they are ready to return to diplomacy if the USA softens its stance.
Iran's Foreign Ministry did not respond to the request for comment. The White House refused to discuss the details of the proposal.
White House press secretary Anna Kelly said: "We do not describe private diplomatic conversations. President Trump has clearly stated that Iran can never possess nuclear weapons."
The latest diplomatic pressure follows a long stalemate. Last week, Iran refused to send a negotiation team to a meeting in Pakistan.
Tehran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz for weeks. They have attacked tankers and other ships. This has blocked access to the pipeline that supplies one-fifth of the world's oil reserves.
